Armenia declared independence from the Soviet Union on 23 September 1991. It is a mountainous land and is situated in what is called the Caucasus region. Its official language is Armenian; however Russian is still widely used. The country suffered a devastating earthquake in 1988 from which it has yet to recover. Armenia has also been badly effected by a continuing war with neighbouring Azerbaijan which started over certain disputed land.
